Car Buying Online

We have two lists of the worst car to buy, one with specific makes and models, and the other much more general and opinionated. We’ll start with that one.

We’d never buy a Kia, at least not for next few years. A Kia salesman told us that if we bought the Sportage we were looking at, that we should make an appointment at the repair center at the same time. I’ve never met a Kia salesmen who drove a Kia. They’re getting better, but why buy a car that’s not as good as other cars like it?

My mom’s family owned the first BMW dealership in the world, but I’d never buy a BMW. I’ve never understood how German cars can have so little head room, when Germans are some of the tallest people in the world, while Japanese cars–made by smaller people–build cars with some of the most head room. The fact is, we avoid all German cars. They’re marketed well and very hip, but I’ve never heard anything good about them. They’re fun, but getting them fixed–and paying the repair bills–isn’t fun at all.

I’ve always thought Jaguars were the best-looking cars on the road, but I’d never buy one. I’m not sure I’d even take one if someone gave it to me. They all seem to be lemons. I avoid all British cars for the same reason I avoid German cars–they’re popular with rich people (or people who want to look like they’re rich), but they’re just not as dependable as their reputations suggest.

We recommend Honda and Toyota, any model except the Honda Passport. They’re not as hip, but they’re so practical. And practical and dependable get our vote every time.

Here’s our list of worst cars to buy by make and model–

BMW 7 Series and X5Astro, Blazer, Express, S-10 with 4WD and Venture (from Chevrolet)

Town & Country (with all wheel drive) (from Chrysler)

Grand Caravan (all wheel drive) (made by Dodge)

Jimmy, Sonoma 4WD, Safari and Savana (from GMC)

QX56 (Infiniti)

Aviator and Navigator (from Lincoln)

QX56 (Inifinit)

S’s and X’s (from Jaguar)

Grand Cherokee (Jeep)

Sedona (Kia)

Discovery (Land Rover)

CLK, M- and S-Classes, SL (Mercedes)

Armada or Titan (Nissan)

Bravada, Cutlass and Silhouette (Oldsmobile)

Aztek, Trans Sport (Pontiac)

Cabrio, Jetta Turbo, Jetta V6, Beetle, Touareg (Volkswagen)

Anyone who knows anything about cars has their own list of the worst cars to buy, but this is ours, along with some things that would make any car a bad buy. Good luck in your search!
